His career
Dr. G. Shankar is a distinguished architect and academician with a B.Arch from Kerala University, an M.S. with first rank and distinction from the Birmingham School of Architecture, UK, and a D.Litt from the University of Asia. ... He is the Founder and Chairman of Habitat Technology Group, established in 1987, and has played a key role in shaping disaster-mitigant design specifications for the Government of India. He has served as advisor and consultant to several national bodies including AICTE, NIRD, CSIR, and the Ministry of Rural Development, and has been a Professor (Design Chair) at McGan’s School of Architecture, Ooty. Dr. Shankar has also worked internationally as Consultant to the Government of India on the Sri Lankan Rehabilitation Package (2010–2012), Mission Chief for Nepal Disaster Mitigation with UNEP, and Team Leader for international evaluation of disaster areas in Sri Lanka and Indonesia with Caritas International. Currently, he holds several prominent positions such as International Director of Architects Sans Frontières (Paris), President of the South Asian Coalition of Community Architects, Chairman of Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam (Government of Kerala), Expert Member of the National Commission on Urbanization, and President of the Kerala Professionals Network. His contributions have been widely recognized with numerous awards including the Padma Shri in 2011, multiple National Awards for green building and eco-city design, and the prestigious Laurie Baker Awards for excellence in low-cost housing and architecture.
